Fast weight loss takes tissue you would rather keep

Weight on a scale is not one substance. When it falls, some of what leaves is fat and some is lean tissue — muscle, and the water and glycogen stored with it. The proportion is not fixed, and two of the things that move it are within your control.

The share is not small

Across weight-loss studies, lean mass has commonly accounted for something in the region of a quarter of total weight lost, and higher where loss is rapid and unaccompanied by resistance work.

Why it matters beyond appearance

Muscle is where most of your glucose goes after a meal, and it is what stands you up out of a chair at seventy. Losing it is easy; putting it back is considerably slower than losing it was.

The two levers

Loading the muscle, and eating enough protein. Neither is exotic and neither requires a gym. Both are harder while appetite is suppressed, which is exactly why they need to be deliberate.

What to measure instead of the scale

A 30-second sit-to-stand count is free, takes half a minute, and responds to strength work long before the mirror does. It is also the measure that keeps going up while the scale is stalled.

FAQ

Can I rebuild it afterwards?

Yes, though it takes longer than losing it did, and rebuilding while still in a deficit is harder than protecting it in the first place.

Does walking protect muscle?

Walking is worth doing for other reasons. Protecting lean mass specifically wants a resistance stimulus.

How would I know it is happening?

You would not, from the scale. A strength measure that stalls or falls while weight drops is the signal most people can actually observe.
